Overview of RFABC Awards

The Recreation Facilities Association of British Columbia celebrates the achievements and contributions of members and the recreation sector through its annual awards program.  The awards represent the dedication, passion and commitment of people involved in furthering the sport and active living goals that serve as a foundation for human and community development.

The awards are presented annually at the RFABC Conference held in the spring at different locations across the province.

The association asks its members to nominate possible candidates for our annual awards. If you are aware of a suitable candidate, facility or zone please submit a nomination. The nominations will be reviewed by a committee who will make the final decision based on information provided.

Award of Merit

This award is presented to any person within the Association for meritorious service to the Association.

RFABC Members only 

Bill Woycik Outstanding Facility Award

This memorial award honors W.E. “Bill” Woycik, a Past President of the RFABC. This award is awarded to one outstanding recreation, sport or leisure facility in the province each year that is relatively new or newly renovated facility demonstrating efficiencies in operation, energy consumption and preventative maintenance.

Conditions of Award:

  • It must be a recreation, sport or leisure facility
  • It must be relatively new or newly renovated facility
  • It must meet a demonstrated community need It should demonstrate innovations in design, energy management, operations, revenue generation, services, etc.
  • The facility or community must have a member of good standing within the RFABC
  • The facility should demonstrate efficiencies in operation, energy consumption and preventative maintenance.

Nominations for this award should have supporting material in a format that can be shown to attending delegates. Example: CD, photos or articles on the facility.

Bob Muir Memorial Trophy

This award is presented to the member of the Association who has made an outstanding contribution to the Association during the year. The applicants have demonstrated dedication to the Association through assisting with growth, and partnerships. The President of the Association will select the recipient.

Dave Daughinee Memorial Trophy

This trophy honors Dave Dauphinee, the first president of the RFABC..

Conditions of Award:

  • The willingness to assist their fellow members throughout the Association
  • Service to the overall growth of the Association
  • Dedication and involvement with their zone
  • For an outstanding member of the Association for their dedication and achievement in the community of their facility

Gerry Morgan Memorial Trophy

This award honors Gerry Morgan (a Past President, a Secretary Treasurer, and former Award of Merit recipient) for his contribution to the Association. The contribution of an individual, non-member,community, or organization outside the membership of the Recreation Facilities Association of British Columbia.

Conditions of the Award

  • The contribution of an individual, non-member, community, or organization outside the membership of the Recreation Facilities Association of British Columbia.
  • Names for the Gerry Morgan Memorial Trophy may be submitted by members or by zones giving the reasons for selection.

RFABC Membership not required.

Harry Atkinson Memorial Trophy

This trophy honors, Harry Atkinson, the seventh RFABC President. Individual must be currently working full-time for a minimum of one calendar year. In a maintenance capacity within a public or private recreation facility (e.g. pool, arena, fitness center, community theater). Nominee must be currently employed in front line or career entry level positions and excludes supervisory or management staff. Nominated individuals are not required to be RFABC members Staff members of current RFABC Board members are not eligible for nominations by a Board member.

RFABC Membership not required.

Joe Dukowski Award

This award in honor of a Past President of the Association is presented annually to a graduating student in the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program at Langara College, in Vancouver BC. The award is a cash bursary of $300.00. In addition, the student will receive an honorarium of $125.00 to assist in attending the annual RFABC Conference. The student must attend the conference to receive the honorarium. The conference host community will provide accommodation and meals (billets) for the student during the conference.

Past President Award

The Past President Award is a trophy presented to the most effective zone. Percentage of attendance at Zone meetings Number and content of Zone meetings Contributions to the newsletter by the Zone Attendance at the conference by Zone members Workshops/seminars, conducted by the Zone

RFABC Associates Scholarship

This award is presented annually by the Associates of the R.FA.B.C. to a student in the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program at Langara College in Vancouver B.C. It is awarded to the second year full time student who shows strong leadership and a high level of interest and aptitude in RECR 1162 during their first term of study. The recipient must also demonstrate a willingness to help their fellow classmates during the Outdoor Field School component of the course. The award is a cash bursary of $500.00.
